What is a truck wet kit? It is the hydraulic power system installed on the truck that supplies pressurized oil to run those auxiliary functions. For fleet owners and body builders, a correctly specified wet kit is not an accessory. It is a working system that directly affects cycle time, payload handling, safety, and uptime.

What Is a Truck Wet Kit?

A truck wet kit is a collection of hydraulic components mounted on a truck, normally a tractor, to power a hydraulic function on a trailer or truck body. The name comes from the hydraulic oil circulating through the system. Unlike an electric-only setup, the wet kit uses engine power through a power take-off, commonly called a PTO, to drive a hydraulic pump.

When the PTO is engaged, the pump draws hydraulic oil from a reservoir and sends it through hoses and control valves to the connected equipment. The oil then returns to the tank for cooling, filtration, and reuse. Depending on the design, the trailer may use the truck's hydraulic supply to raise a dump body, run a moving floor, power a hydraulic winch, or operate another attachment.

A wet kit is commonly fitted to tractors working with dump trailers, end dumps, side dumps, bottom dumps, live-bottom trailers, walking floors, tankers with hydraulic pumps, and specialized hauling equipment. It can also be fitted to rigid trucks with tipper bodies, cranes, or other hydraulically operated bodies.

The Main Components of a Truck Wet Kit

Wet kits vary by application, but a complete system generally includes the following core components:

  • A PTO matched to the truck transmission and required pump speed

  • A hydraulic pump sized for the necessary flow and pressure

  • A hydraulic oil reservoir with appropriate capacity, baffling, breathers, and mounting provisions

  • Control valves, relief valves, fittings, hoses, quick couplings, and return-line plumbing

  • Filtration, gauges, and, where required, an oil cooler and protective guards

The PTO is the mechanical connection between the transmission and the hydraulic system. PTO selection must account for transmission model, mounting position, torque capacity, gear ratio, and intended operating duty. A mismatch can create poor pump performance or place excessive load on the transmission interface.

The pump determines oil flow, normally measured in gallons per minute, while the relief setting and circuit design determine operating pressure, normally measured in pounds per square inch. Both values matter. High flow can produce fast operation, but it also creates more heat and can exceed the trailer manufacturer's limits. High pressure may be needed for demanding loads, but should never be used as a substitute for correctly sized cylinders, motors, or trailer equipment.

The reservoir is more than a storage tank. It gives hot oil time to release air and dissipate heat before returning to the pump. Tank capacity, return-line placement, suction plumbing, filtration, and breather quality all influence hydraulic reliability. A poorly designed tank installation can contribute to aeration, contamination, overheating, and premature pump wear.

Common Wet Kit Circuit Configurations

The correct circuit depends on the equipment being powered. Buyers often refer to single-line, two-line, or three-line systems, although the exact terminology can vary by region and trailer manufacturer.

A single-line system typically uses one pressure line from the truck to the trailer, with oil returning through the same line or through a circuit arrangement on the equipment. It can suit certain basic applications, but it is not appropriate for every trailer design.

A two-line wet kit normally has a pressure line and a return line. This configuration is common for equipment requiring a more controlled supply and return path. It may be used on dump trailers and other hydraulically powered equipment, depending on the valve arrangement and manufacturer requirements.

A three-line system adds a dedicated low-pressure return or case-drain line. It is often required for hydraulic motors, such as those used on walking floor or live-bottom trailers. Motor case drains must return oil with minimal back pressure. Connecting a case drain incorrectly can damage motor seals and shorten motor life.

Some systems use a direct-mount pump on the PTO, while others use a remote-mounted pump driven by a shaft. Direct-mount arrangements are compact and common, but clearance, service access, heat exposure, and transmission configuration must be reviewed. Remote systems can provide more packaging flexibility, although they add driveline alignment and guarding requirements.

Sizing a Wet Kit for the Actual Job

Wet kit selection begins with the trailer or body manufacturer's hydraulic requirements, not with a generic truck specification. The required flow, maximum pressure, type of couplers, oil cleanliness standard, and return-line arrangement should be confirmed before components are selected.

For example, an end-dump trailer may need a system designed for intermittent, high-load cylinder operation. A walking floor trailer may require sustained oil flow for longer periods, making heat management and case-drain routing more critical. A hydraulic winch may have different flow and control requirements again. One tractor may serve several trailers, but only if the wet kit and coupler configuration are compatible with every intended application.

Pump displacement and PTO ratio must be considered together. At a given engine speed, these determine pump rpm and hydraulic flow. A system that produces enough flow only at excessive engine speed can be inefficient and difficult for operators to control. Conversely, undersized flow can create slow cycle times that reduce operational productivity.

Reservoir capacity must also suit the circuit. More demanding or continuous-duty applications may need a larger tank, effective cooling, and carefully designed return plumbing. Local climate, operating hours, payload, terrain, and whether the truck works in stop-start or continuous service all influence the final specification.

Installation Details That Affect Reliability

A wet kit should be treated as an integrated installation, not a box of hydraulic parts. Hose routing needs to avoid exhaust heat, sharp edges, moving suspension components, and pinch points. Hoses must have adequate bend radius and support, while fittings should remain accessible for inspection and service.

The tank and pump must be securely mounted, and the suction line must be properly sized and sealed. Air leaks on the suction side may not produce an obvious external oil leak, but they can cause pump noise, cavitation, foaming, and inconsistent operation. Return lines also need adequate diameter because excessive back pressure can raise heat and harm hydraulic motors.

Control placement matters for safe operation. Operators need clear PTO engagement procedures and controls that prevent accidental activation. For dump operations, the truck and trailer must be operated on stable, level ground wherever possible, with attention to overhead obstructions, load distribution, and the trailer maker's operating limits.

Maintenance Practices for Longer Wet Kit Life

Hydraulic systems usually reveal problems before they fail completely. Slow operation, unusual pump noise, hot oil, foamy fluid, leaking fittings, or inconsistent trailer response should be investigated early. Continuing to run a contaminated or overheating system can turn a hose, filter, or seal issue into pump and motor damage.

Routine maintenance should include checking hydraulic oil level and condition, inspecting hoses and couplings, monitoring filter service intervals, and looking for abrasion or leaks around the PTO, pump, tank, and valve connections. Oil should be changed based on service conditions, fluid analysis where available, and the component manufacturers' recommendations rather than a fixed calendar interval alone.

Keeping couplers clean is especially important for tractors that change trailers frequently. Dirt introduced through a hydraulic connection circulates through expensive components. It should also identify preferred hose ends, coupler types, reservoir mounting arrangement, filter rating, control method, and any required cooler or guarding.
